Vincent Ayar and the Building of the Ooze Brand

Vincent Ayar has overseen the Ooze brand since the company began in 2015. The brand rests on a deliberately playful name, chosen because much of the early product targeted concentrate users, and on four principles: fun, function, interchangeability and portability.

Naming a brand after a texture

"When you think 'ooze,' you think slime," Vincent has said. Concentrates are thick, sticky extracts, and a name that conjures that texture speaks directly to the people who use them. It is short, easy to remember and hard to confuse with anything else on a shop counter.

Good brand names often do one job very well. This one signals the audience and the attitude at once.

Fun

Accessories are a discretionary purchase. A brand that feels playful gives shoppers a reason to choose it over a plain alternative. Fun shows up in naming, such as the Slugger Dabbin Dugout, a baseball-themed travel kit, and in the brand's general voice.

Function

Playfulness only works if the product performs. Ooze sources every component itself, including batteries, and backs its 510-thread batteries with a warranty program. Function is the part of the brand that keeps customers coming back after the first purchase.

Interchangeability

A system is stickier than a single item. The Kettle rig and its Stack, Trip and Steamboat variations show the idea: related pieces that share a design language. When products fit together, a customer who owns one has a reason to buy the next.

Portability

Many Ooze products are designed to travel, from compact batteries to silicone kits. Portability is a practical promise that also defines the brand's personality: on the go, durable, easy to carry.

Brand for a national audience

The company is proud of Oak Park and Metro Detroit, but Vincent has said the brand is built for the whole country. Keeping design and marketing staff largely local while aiming at national shelves is one of the more distinctive parts of how he has approached the brand.

Consistency as the long game

A brand is the sum of thousands of small, repeated choices: the same tone in product names, the same quality bar in every battery, the same visual cues on packaging. Overseeing the brand from day one has given Vincent Ayar unusual continuity. The person who shaped the first battery line in 2015 was still shaping the catalog as it reached tens of thousands of square feet and thousands of retailers. That continuity is hard to buy later, and it is a large part of why the name Ooze reads clearly on a crowded shelf.
